Asteronotus cespitosus is characterized by its distinctive colour pattern: On the brownish body are large lighter tubercles arranged along the middorsal line, and in concentric rings. There is a uniform reddish-brown colour variant at the Sea-Slug Forum without this colour pattern, which I think to be a different species.
Note added on 15 November 2010: This 'variant' is Asteronotus hepaticus.
More informations on Asteronotus cespitosus are at Bill Rudman's Sea-Slug Forum!
