Aegires serenae is characterized by its colour pattern, ranging in colour from dull white to grey-green with scattered raised black spots. The most characteristic difference is the development of 3 long extrabranchial appendages which shield the three distinct gills.The rhinophores are yellow. Some specimens have a yellowish margin of the mantle. It feeds on the calcareous sponge Leucetta chagosensis.
It was first placed in the genus Notodoris. I'm following the recent paper: Fahey S.J. & T.M. Gosliner. 2004. A Phylogenetic Analysis of the Aegiridae Fischer, 1883 (Mollusca, Nudibranchia, Phanerobranchia) with Descriptions of Eight New Species and a Reassessment of Phanerobranch Relationships. and change the genus Notodoris into Aegires.
