Plocamopherus maculatus is characterised by its pale whitish-ash colour, irregularly dotted with orange and yellow. There are four small crimson dots near the base of the gills. The gills are pale and freckled with brown. These animals can also turn the back end of the body into a high flattened paddle which helps to swim.
