There are many similar coloured chromodorids which Bill Rudman calls the "Chromodoris quadricolor colour group" of species characterised by black longitudinal lines, bluish backgrounds and orange borders. Chromodoris michaeli can be distinguished by a fine white line at the mantle margin and a broad orange band. The broad black band encircling the mantle  outside the gills and the rhinophores can be broken anteriorly and posteriorly. There are also some black spots in the midline.
